We are very sad to announce that Prof. Christine McCall Probes, born on April 16th 1943, passed away on November 14th 2021. In 1975 she joined the University of South Florida, and in 2008 she was promoted to full Professor of French Literature. Christine Probes was decorated Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French government. She published on poetry, epistolary, rhetoric, and the emblem, for example on the letters of Liselotte von der Pfalz, on the emblems of Georgette de Montenay or Otto van Veen. Her co-edited volume The Art of Persuasion: Emblems and Propaganda appeared in 2014. Christine Probes served on the Executive Councils of international societies, and she participated regularly at the International Conferences of the Society for Emblem Studies, most recently in 2017 in Nancy, France. She registered for our next Conference planned for 2020 in Coimbra, which had to be delayed to 2022. We were able to meet her over the last months at our regular online meetings “On the Road to Coimbra”. With Christine Probes we lose a highly esteemed member of our society. We will remember her with deep gratitude and affection.
